Isolation and loneliness in colour

During the Christmas season special attention is being paid to people who live in isolation suffering from loneliness. Reference is made to the Covid-19 period when strict measures such as home confinement were imposed on the population. For many people this implied an increase in their sense of loneliness. This article examines the use of colours in visual communications such as in illustration, film and book covers, that represent this mental state. Applying the Semantic Colour Space as an analytical tool, some distinct colour combinations and specific hues emerge that represent different aspects of seclusion and loneliness.
