COLOUR/SHAPE relations

This research was conducted by Inez Michiels (CITY OF 8) in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Art Antwerp (KASKA). The focus of this study is on the relationship between colour and shape parameters. 90 abstract artworks were analysed into five entities of image: shape, composition, colour, colour combination and colour palette. A total of 33 variables of image where placed in opposite parameters in Likert scales. Three KASKA students analysed the artworks according to these 33 variables.

The study wants to shed light on subjective and objective parameters of image and on a possible hierarchy of meaning. Some parameters seem to be more abstract than others. The goal is to come with a set of objective parameters that enables the analysis of images. Furthermore, the study examines eventually meaningful relationships between the parameters.

The research is in progress.
